"Killers of the Dream"
Killers of the Dream (annotated version)
By Dr. Emily Grant DeCarlo (copyright 2013)
At the risk of seeming critical,
Got something to say that’s real and empirical!
Something that I’ve witnessed
That threatens to overshadow a miracle:
The phenomenon of a hero
Who walked among us/
Lived and died to set us free.
A bulwark of a man who dared
Challenge strange fruit hanging from a tree.
All just so incredulous to me:
How this man like Moses led his people
Yet these descendants,
Partakers of the vision and the dream
So blind they cannot see
Crystal blue waters of freedom
No longer flowing pure and clean,
Contaminated by minds too
Delirious to see
They are killers of the dream,
A threat to democracy!
If one mind is imprisoned
Hence, the domino effect:
Nobody can be free.
We are all connected
In this nightmare
If somebody doesn’t wake up,
We’ll all be drowned by the turbulence
In a dark and angry sea,
Where brothers and sisters are calling each other “niggers”
Instead of forgiveness, rage is flowing
Like blood infested rivers
In spite of reason,
Drug riddled thinking is pulling triggers
Mothers stooped over lifeless bodies,
Crying “Mercy Me!”
No longer keepers of the light
Sucked down into the
Hazy cesspool of the night/
Denying the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.
Sentenced to self- inflicted insanity
Guilty of being killers of the dream!
